Wei-Yin Chen(8-9) was tagged with the loss. Norris, when asked about his 11 strikeout performance noted, 'The important thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the other hand, since we won it feels great!' The game was a scoreless duel until the 8th inning. Kevin Jepsen earned his 20th save. The loss was charged to Zach Putnam(5-2) in relief. Both teams were tied at 1 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Washington prevailed in the 14th inning. Tyler Holt drew a walk. Carlos Pena was next and he reached on an error. After an out was recorded, Brandon Phillips then stroked a single giving Washington the victory and sending the 28,597 home-town fans home happy. Washington totaled 11 hits on the night. Todd Redmond(3-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing no runs. J.J. Hoover(4-2) ended up with the loss in relief. He allowed 3 hits and 1 walk in 1 and 1/3 innings. The win by Washington is a very welcome one as they have been struggling in recent days. Their record now stands at 40-65 - only 2-8 in their last ten games. With this loss, Arizona has a 6-4 record of late, 55-50 overall.

Wacha(2-2) gave Pittsburgh a solid outing. He didn't give up much, just 4 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings lowering his ERA to 3.90. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning. Wacha got help from Koji Uehara who earned his 21st save. Jered Weaver(8-9) absorbed the loss. He gave up 2 runs and 3 hits in 5 and 2/3 innings. The Pittsburgh fans were thrilled by the performance put forth by Wacha, but it was clearly his strikeouts that they enjoyed most. 'When he reached 10 strikeouts the fans showed him their appreciation with a loud cheer.' Pittsburgh's manager said following the game.
