Cleveland had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning with 3 runs on 3 hits. Jason Kipnis opened up the inning nicely when he stroked a one-base hit. Emilio Bonifacio was next and he ripped a base-knock. Didi Gregorius was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Adam Eaton stepped in and he hit a sacrifice fly. Harrison came up to bat and slapped a single. Kole Calhoun added his contribution to the rally and drew a walk to load the bases. Carlos Santana stepped into the batter's box and he drew a walk. Yan Gomes then drew a walk. Juan Uribe dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. Houston proved to be no trouble in the 9th. The winning pitcher was Adam Ottavino(2-3) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Cody Allen gained credit for his 20th save. Josh Fields(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He was not very effective, surrendering 3 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. Washington scored the winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning plating 2 runs using 3 hits. Mark Teixeira led off the inning for Washington when he laced a base-knock. After an out was recorded, Wilson Ramos came to bat and doubled. Michael Choice got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Jayson Nix followed next and he ripped a single. Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Pittsburgh pulled the game out in the 11th inning. Pedro Alvarez hit a bases-empty home run resulting in an exciting win for Pittsburgh and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Pittsburgh managed 8 hits in their victory. Koji Uehara(4-1) allowed no runs in 2 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Daisuke Matsuzaka(5-4) suffered the loss in relief. He allowed 1 hit and 1 walk in 2/3 of an inning. St. Louis out-hit Chicago (NL) 13 to 10, but Chicago (NL) ended up with more runs. Harang got relief help from Wade Davis who gained credit for his 4th save. Joe Kelly(4-3) absorbed the loss.
